Frequently Asked Questions

Please reach us at surefirechimneysweep@gmail.com if you cannot find an answer to your question.

You should have your chimney swept at least once a year, but this frequency increases depending on the fuel you burn and your usage.

HETAS encourage having your chimney swept at least twice a year when burning wood and at least once a year when burning smokeless fuels.

The best times to get your chimney swept are just before the start of the heating season and after periods of prolonged use.

 Other considerations:

  • Appliance usage: The more your appliance is used, the more frequently you should have it swept.
  • Appliance manufacturer instructions: Always check the manufacturer's instructions for your specific stove or boiler, as they may have different recommendations.
  • Selling your home or getting insurance: You may need a record of maintenance from your HETAS technician to show a new buyer or your home insurance provider.

The ideal time to get your chimney swept is just before the heating season begins in autumn. This removes any debris or nests that have built up over the warmer months. If you require a mid-season sweep, schedule it after the peak of the main heating season.  Remember to book early to avoid a wait for your sweep as the autumn and winter months are very busy.

  • Before the heating season: This is recommended for all chimney types to ensure it's ready for heavy use.
  • After a prolonged period of use: If you use your fire heavily during the colder months, your chimney may need a sweep mid-winter or after the season has ended.

The length of a chimney cleaning depends on several factors, including the size of your chimney, the type of fuel you burn, and the amount of buildup inside your chimney. Typically, a chimney cleaning takes between 30 minutes to an hour. However, if there is a significant amount of build-up or if repairs are needed, it may take longer. Howard will provide a more accurate estimate of the time needed to clean your chimney during the inspection process.

You do not necessarily need to be present during the chimney cleaning, but we recommend that someone is available to provide access to your home and to answer any questions that the chimney sweep may have. If you are unable to be present during the cleaning, we can arrange for a time that is convenient for you to access your home. Our goal is to ensure that your chimney is cleaned and maintained safely and efficiently, with as little disruption to your schedule as possible.

No, there shouldn't be any significant mess when we carry out a chimney sweep.  I use heavy-duty dust sheets, a powerful HEPA vacuum, and sealing systems to contain soot and debris, leaving your home clean and tidy. While minor dust might occur, I am trained to prevent significant mess, but you can help by clearing the area around the fireplace and protecting delicate items.

What I do to minimize mess:

  • Use dust sheets: I lay professional-grade, heavy-duty sheets to protect floors and furniture from soot.
  • Use HEPA vacuum: Industrial-grade vacuum systems are used to capture the finest particles that become airborne.
  • Seal the fireplace opening: Foam blocks or other methods are used to create a tight seal around the fireplace or stove opening, preventing dust from escaping.
  • Maintains negative pressure: The vacuum system is connected to maintain negative pressure, pulling airborne particles into the vacuum and preventing them from spreading.

What you can do to help:

  • Clear the area: Make a clear path from the main entrance to the chimney and clear a working space around the fireplace.
  • Remove items: Move any ornaments, furniture, or other items from the hearth and surrounding area.
  • Cover soft furnishings: Cover any remaining soft furnishings or furniture to be extra cautious.
  • Ensure access: Provide a plug socket for their equipment.

When a small amount of mess might occur:

  • Blocked chimneys: If there is a bird's nest or other significant blockage, more effort may be needed, potentially leading to more dust.
  • Older properties: In some cases, especially with older systems, there might be more deposits, but professionals are equipped to handle this.

By hiring a professional, you are investing in a clean and efficient process, so you can expect your home to be left as clean as you found it.

  • Smoke blowing back into the room.
  • A bad smell when you haven't lit a fire.
  • Reduced chimney efficiency.

  • Prevents chimney fires: Removing soot, tar, and creosote buildup prevents the risk of a chimney fire.
  • Reduces carbon monoxide poisoning: A clear chimney ensures proper ventilation.
  • Maintains efficiency: A clean chimney works more efficiently as an exhaust system.
